Audi TT RS

The veteran coupe still has no shortage of admirers

- Ian Eveleigh

HOW MUCH ATTENTION DO YOU PAY to a TT RS? The number I’ve started to notice on the road during the months I’ve been driving ours suggests I may have been taking them for granted, but in that same time I’ve also discovered that many other people very much do not.

The telephone-box red paint of our car no doubt helps, making it stand out in a sea of monochrome. Likewise the 20-inch alloys that are pure Hot Wheels in their design and their scale relative to the rest of the car. But whatever the cause, adult heads often turn, children point and shout (nice things, I think), and there’s the chance of a compliment being received any time those oversized wheels stop turning.

The 20-ish-year-old at the Costa Drive Thru window, for example, couldn’t seem to help but confess ‘I really like your car’ as he passed my drink down. There was also the delivery driver who, upon recognising the RS a few miles from its regular home, felt compelled to shout out: ‘It’s the nice Audi! Every day I pass your nice Audi. It’s the last one, isn’t it? The last TT.’ (Good knowledge.) Then there was the roofer who, while admiring KY22 LVE during a tea break, guessed that ‘it must be worth at least a hundred bags’. Come to think of it, that may explain the size of the bill for the new tiles, but it would also surely please anyone who had spent ‘just’ 71 grand on an RS specced like ours.

So a spring chicken it may no longer be, but it appears there’s still plenty of love out there for the TT RS. Audi should be proud.
