5 CITY SNAPSHOT
A new photography exhibition in the Manchester Art Gallery shows there’s more to the city than football. Through the sharp humorous lens of Martin Parr, everyday life in the city since the 1970s is exposed; from supermarket shopping to being tattooed. “He gets closer to people than others,” says curator, Natasha Howes of the photographer who started his career in the city. Nothing is too mundane for Parr’s lens – even apple pies at Bury Market. It whets the appetite for his retrospective in March at London’s National Portrait Gallery.
Martin Parr: Return to Manchester is on from 16 November 2018 to 22 April 2019 at Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3JL, 0161 235 8888, manchesterartgallery.org
