Fans wait for retained list as Jack signs deal

- By DANIEL CLARK

JACK Aitchison has signed a new deal to extend his contract at Exeter City until the end of the 2025-2 season.

The 24-year-old Scot had one year remaining on his current deal at St James Park, but has opted to commit his future to the club for a further season.

Aitchison has made 41 appearances for the Grecians this season. He scored four times for the club following his move from Motherwell last summer.

“This was an easy decision for me really,” Aitchison said on the new deal, extending his spell in Devon for a further season. It has been going on for a couple of weeks back and forth but I always knew I wanted to stay here and having that trust from the Gaffer and all the back room staff made it easy for me.

“When I joined I didn’t really know what I was coming in to, such a long way from home, but after the first couple of days it felt quite homely and I have enjoyed it so far.

“I’ve been playing good I think on and off the ball, but obviously hitting those numbers and targets the Gaffer and I have set myself, I’m a little disappointed not to have hit them, but to have played nearly every game has been brilliant.

“Goals and assists are obviously what people look at but I feel I’m doing all the other stuff really well and I think I’ve been a little bit unlucky but next season I feel like I can really kick on.”

Manager Gary Caldwell said he was delighted to secure Aitchison’s signature for another additional year.

The boss said: “Jack was one of our best players this season and he is someone who is really reliable and hard working.

“He has given so much off the ball and he’s been pretty unlucky with scoring goals and providing assists, but we know will improve on that next season.

“He is a fantastic player who we wanted to keep at the club for longer.

“He has found a home in Exeter City and this is a club where he wants to develop as a player and progress. Jack has aspirations to play at a higher level, and we want that higher level to be with us.”

City finished 13th in League One after a season of ups and down which ended in safety.

A retained list is expected any day now as Caldwell begins to plan for next season. Keep an eye on www. devonlive.com/sport.
