Layout a family tree
When dealing with more distant branches that you may not be familiar with, or if including indirect lines (for instance your ancestors’ siblings), then you may well be juggling a lot of names and dates. Creating a rough working family tree (or trees) will help you keep track of the people and their relationships to each other.
