Declaration of Arbroath: 2020. Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project : report

by Graham S. Holton and Alasdair F. Macdonald (Background to the heraldic research and images of coats of arms by Andrew Douglas)

-

The publication details the research into the lives and families of 16 of the signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath, 1320. The project findings investigate a range of material – from genealogical analysis of secondary sources to that of the heraldry on the wax seals and DNA projects. The genealogy research was undertaken by Post Graduate Diploma students at the University of Strathclyde, while the genetic genealogy strand of the project was largely by university staff members Graham Holton and Alasdair Macdonald (and consultation with John Cleary). For each of the 16 focus individuals and their families is provided a narrative account, a genealogical chart and a coat of arms; and for the 8 focus families researched in the genetic genealogy strand a genealogical haplotree is included, providing traditional family tree information alongside the date ranges within which each SNP was formed. A very interesting read both for the project work and the visual material (the genealogy charts, genealogical haplotrees, and coats of arms) that have been created to illustrate the findings.
