CHROMOSOME MATCHING
If you have your DNA on 23andme, Myheritage, Familytreedna or Gedmatch then you have access to a chromosome browser which allows you to ‘see’ the segments that you and your matches share.
1 DNA painter https://dnapainter.com allows you to create a profile to put all those segments in one place – building up your unique DNA picture.
2 It is easy to register for a free account. Once you have done so, click on the ‘chromosome mapping’ circle and then create a new profile.
3 The next screen will explain about the profile and offer some advice. This site has lots of places to visit when/if you need more information.
4 Once you have assigned a name for your profile you can see your ‘empty’ chromosomes ready to be filled! The page tells you to click on ‘paint a match’ but before you do, I strongly recommend you click on ‘where do I find the data I need for chromosome mapping?’. This opens a separate page giving instructions on how to transfer your segments from your DNA site to DNA painter.
5 Here’s one I made earlier! You can see that some of the segments have been added where I’m not sure of our connection or even whether they are from my maternal or paternal side. It’s easy to change information about the segment – or even delete them. Still having problems? There are lots of videos online giving more help and advice. Have a go, but be aware it’s addictive!
