1 Royal couple
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have released a new official portrait to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. The couple, who married in 1947, celebrated their special day with a private dinner at Windsor Castle. Royal Mail also released a set of special stamps.
2 The budget
Chancellor Philip Hammond set out the autumn budget on Wednesday 22 November. As part of the budget, he revealed plans for the Government to build 300,000 homes a year. The plans hope to tackle the shortage of housing and make it easier for young people to buy homes.
3 Free karaoke
A Chinese province is offering free karaoke for people over the age of 50. It’s part of the government’s plans to get the older population out more.
4 Prehistoric shark
Portuguese scientists have found a prehistoric shark off the Algarve coast. The “living fossil” dates back to the dinosaur period, making the species about 80 million years old! The scientists from the Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere said the rare creature was discovered more than 600m below the surface of the ocean.
5 Cyber security
Could you have a hidden talent for cyber security? Cyber Discovery is a new training programme aimed at students in years 10-13 across England. You can find out more at: joincyberdiscovery.com. Check out Just The Job on page 27, too!
6 Black Friday
This Friday (24 November) is Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year.
7 cat statue
The first cat in space is to be honoured with a special memorial. French cat, Félicette, travelled to space aboard the Véronique AG1 rocket in October 1963. She has received little attention since then. Now, thanks to a campaign on the Kickstarter website, the cat will be given a memorial statue in Paris.
8 advent calendar
Christmas is coming, folks! To celebrate, we asked you: What is your favourite Christmas advert of 2017 so far? The results are in and Marks and Spencer’s ‘An Extraordinary Christmas’ is the winner!
9 Music award
Niall Horan was awarded New Artist Of The Year at the 2017 American Music Awards (the AMAs). Niall also performed his hit track Slow Hands at the ceremony.
10 French kitten
A little French kitten travelled all the way to the UK in a car engine! The three-month-old kitty was found by a couple who had been holidaying in France. They believe it may have got trapped in the car on their way home. The kitten has been named Malo and will be rehomed by Blue Cross now.
11 Xmas calendar
Zoella’s Christmas advent calendar has come under criticism for its hefty price tag! The calendar was being sold for £50, but Boots has now decided to drop the price to £25 after customers complained it was too expensive.
12 Big birthday
Twins Irene Crump and Phyllis Jones celebrated their 101st birthday last week, in Stourport, Worcestershire. There were so many candles on the cake, they nearly set the house alight!
13 Air crash
A small plane and a helicopter crashed in Buckinghamshire last week, killing all four men involved. An investigation is now underway.
14 Baby joy
A baby has been born at London’s Waterloo Station. Evelyn Brandao was travelling on a train when she went into labour, later giving birth to little baby Reign at the station. Mother and baby are reported to be doing well.
To mark anti-bullying week earlier this month, the Minister for School Standards and Equalities, shared his vision with First News. Nick Gibb said: “Bullying is cruel. We are supporting schools to tackle bullying of all kinds and I am particularly keen to end the negative use of the word ‘gay’, which can be very hurtful when LGBT pupils are discovering who they are. Thanks to papers like First News reporting on this issue, we can help young people feel more confident about speaking out against bullying in their schools.”
16 The showdown
YouTubers N60 Sean, Seapeekay and Tommyt999 will be attempting to break records live on the Guinness World Records YouTube channel on 28 November, to celebrate the Guinness World Record Gamer’s Edition.
17 Copy cat?
Former Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell has accused John Lewis of copying him. The author says the company’s Christmas advert featuring Moz the monster is very similar to his book, Mr Underbed. Both are about a boy who has a giant, friendly monster living under his bed. John Lewis disagreed, saying: “The story of a big hairy monster under the bed, which keeps a child from sleeping, is a universal tale.”
18 Lord of the rings
The Lord of the Rings is to be made into a TV show! Amazon is planning several series, telling the story of what happened before The Fellowship of the Ring.
19 Book to film
Enid Blyton’s book The Magic Faraway Tree is to be made into a film for the first time.
20 Sailor dies
A British sailor has died while competing in a round the world race. Simon Speirs fell overboard during the Clipper Round The World challenge.
