1 Royal cou­ple

The Queen and the Duke of Ed­in­burgh have re­leased a new of­fi­cial por­trait to cel­e­brate their 70th wed­ding an­niver­sary. The cou­ple, who mar­ried in 1947, cel­e­brated their spe­cial day with a pri­vate din­ner at Wind­sor Cas­tle. Royal Mail also re­leased a set of spe­cial stamps.

2 The bud­get

Chan­cel­lor Philip Ham­mond set out the au­tumn bud­get on Wed­nes­day 22 Novem­ber. As part of the bud­get, he re­vealed plans for the Govern­ment to build 300,000 homes a year. The plans hope to tackle the short­age of hous­ing and make it eas­ier for young peo­ple to buy homes.

3 Free karaoke

A Chi­nese prov­ince is of­fer­ing free karaoke for peo­ple over the age of 50. It’s part of the govern­ment’s plans to get the older pop­u­la­tion out more.

4 Pre­his­toric shark

Por­tuguese sci­en­tists have found a pre­his­toric shark off the Al­garve coast. The “liv­ing fos­sil” dates back to the di­nosaur pe­riod, mak­ing the species about 80 mil­lion years old! The sci­en­tists from the In­sti­tute for the Sea and At­mos­phere said the rare crea­ture was dis­cov­ered more than 600m be­low the sur­face of the ocean.

5 Cy­ber se­cu­rity

6 Black Fri­day

This Fri­day (24 Novem­ber) is Black Fri­day, one of the big­gest shop­ping days of the year.

7 cat statue

The first cat in space is to be hon­oured with a spe­cial memo­rial. French cat, Félicette, trav­elled to space aboard the Véronique AG1 rocket in Oc­to­ber 1963. She has re­ceived lit­tle at­ten­tion since then. Now, thanks to a cam­paign on the Kick­starter web­site, the cat will be given a memo­rial statue in Paris.

8 ad­vent cal­en­dar

Christ­mas is com­ing, folks! To cel­e­brate, we asked you: What is your favourite Christ­mas ad­vert of 2017 so far? The re­sults are in and Marks and Spencer’s ‘An Ex­tra­or­di­nary Christ­mas’ is the win­ner!

9 Mu­sic award

Niall Ho­ran was awarded New Artist Of The Year at the 2017 Amer­i­can Mu­sic Awards (the AMAs). Niall also per­formed his hit track Slow Hands at the cer­e­mony.

10 French kit­ten

A lit­tle French kit­ten trav­elled all the way to the UK in a car en­gine! The three-month-old kitty was found by a cou­ple who had been hol­i­day­ing in France. They be­lieve it may have got trapped in the car on their way home. The kit­ten has been named Malo and will be re­homed by Blue Cross now.

11 Xmas cal­en­dar

Zoella’s Christ­mas ad­vent cal­en­dar has come un­der crit­i­cism for its hefty price tag! The cal­en­dar was be­ing sold for £50, but Boots has now de­cided to drop the price to £25 af­ter cus­tomers com­plained it was too ex­pen­sive.

12 Big birth­day

Twins Irene Crump and Phyl­lis Jones cel­e­brated their 101st birth­day last week, in Stour­port, Worces­ter­shire. There were so many can­dles on the cake, they nearly set the house alight!

13 Air crash

A small plane and a heli­copter crashed in Buck­ing­hamshire last week, killing all four men involved. An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is now un­der­way.

14 Baby joy

A baby has been born at Lon­don’s Water­loo Sta­tion. Eve­lyn Bran­dao was trav­el­ling on a train when she went into labour, later giv­ing birth to lit­tle baby Reign at the sta­tion. Mother and baby are re­ported to be do­ing well.

15 An­tibul­ly­ing

To mark anti-bul­ly­ing week ear­lier this month, the Min­is­ter for School Stan­dards and Equal­i­ties, shared his vi­sion with First News. Nick Gibb said: “Bul­ly­ing is cruel. We are sup­port­ing schools to tackle bul­ly­ing of all kinds and I am par­tic­u­larly keen to end the neg­a­tive use of the word ‘gay’, which can be very hurt­ful when LGBT pupils are dis­cov­er­ing who they are. Thanks to pa­pers like First News re­port­ing on this is­sue, we can help young peo­ple feel more con­fi­dent about speak­ing out against bul­ly­ing in their schools.”

16 The show­down

YouTu­bers N60 Sean, Seapeekay and Tom­myt999 will be at­tempt­ing to break records live on the Guin­ness World Records YouTube chan­nel on 28 Novem­ber, to cel­e­brate the Guin­ness World Record Gamer’s Edi­tion.

17 Copy cat?

For­mer Chil­dren’s Lau­re­ate Chris Rid­dell has ac­cused John Lewis of copy­ing him. The au­thor says the com­pany’s Christ­mas ad­vert fea­tur­ing Moz the mon­ster is very sim­i­lar to his book, Mr Un­derbed. Both are about a boy who has a gi­ant, friendly mon­ster liv­ing un­der his bed. John Lewis dis­agreed, say­ing: “The story of a big hairy mon­ster un­der the bed, which keeps a child from sleep­ing, is a universal tale.”

18 Lord of the rings

The Lord of the Rings is to be made into a TV show! Ama­zon is plan­ning sev­eral series, telling the story of what hap­pened be­fore The Fel­low­ship of the Ring.

19 Book to film

Enid Bly­ton’s book The Magic Far­away Tree is to be made into a film for the first time.

20 Sailor dies

A Bri­tish sailor has died while com­pet­ing in a round the world race. Simon Speirs fell over­board dur­ing the Clip­per Round The World chal­lenge.
