The Feed It Forward supermarket has just launched in Toronto, with all the price tags saying the same thing: “Pay what you can.”

Everything for sale in the store is donated, a lot of it from other supermarkets. Some things would have ended up in the rubbish bin, such as misshapen fruit and vegetables or products that are nearing their expiry date.

“It’s a simple procedure of taking those trucks that are destined for landfills, hijacking them and giving them to people in need,” said Jagger Gordon, above, the chef who launched the store. “You take a basket for the day and feed your family with it and come back the next day. If you can afford to pay more, go right ahead. If you can’t pay for what you have, then don’t.”

More than 600 volunteers help run the shop. All profits are used to cover costs, like rent and transport.
