Invention: Retractable dog lead Year: 1908

Inventor: Mary A Delaney

This simple but clever invention has allowed dogs to have more freedom during their daily walks, while still allowing their owners to have control over them and shorten the lead if they need to – thanks to a long lead coiled around a drum, and a spring mechanism.

Interestingly, although we talk about taking our dogs for a walk, Delaney said the lead was for when dogs “are taken out to accompany a person in his or her walks”!
