Pan­tomime, or panto for short, is a fes­tive show that is tra­di­tion­ally pop­u­lar with fam­i­lies in the UK and has been around for many, many years. A panto is a type of play that retells pop­u­lar fairy tales, is of­ten funny, full of mu­sic and in­volves lots of au­di­ence par­tic­i­pa­tion.

Pan­tomimes com­monly run in the­atres across the UK be­tween De­cem­ber and Jan­uary. It’s tra­di­tional for some of the male ac­tors to play fe­male char­ac­ters and for the fe­male ac­tors to play male char­ac­ters.

The UK’s most pop­u­lar pan­tos in­clude Aladdin, Jack And The Beanstalk, Dick Whit­ting­ton, Cin­derella, Peter Pan, Sleep­ing Beauty and Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
