AT this time of year, most people are busy preparing for the holiday season, buying presents, arranging parties and hanging out with friends and family. But while we are doing this we sometimes forget about the people that don’t always have someone to care for them – the elderly.

At Christmas time, many elderly members of your community might be feeling alone and isolated if they have no one to celebrate with during this special season.

They can also be quite vulnerable as the temperature outside drops. There are severe health risks that come with being too cold in the winter months, so making sure they are properly looked after is important.

What can I do to help?

Look out for your elderly neighbours. Regularly check on them to make sure they’re okay and keeping warm. Offer a home-made gift or card to show them that they’re loved and appreciated.

Offer to lend a hand. You could help decorate their home so that they feel in the holiday spirit.

Most importantly, show that you care. Anything you do will be greatly appreciated and makes holidays a little more bearable for those who are in need of some love.

Childline is always available if you’d like to chat to someone about caring for the elderly this season.
