WHAT IS VE DAY?
VE Day is the name given to the date that the Allied Forces formally recognised the surrender of Nazi Germany.
What happened on VE Day?
Huge celebrations were held across the
West, especially in Great Britain and North
America. More than one million people celebrated in the streets throughout the
UK, including Princess Elizabeth (who would become Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret, who wandered through the crowds in disguise.
What’s happening this year?
It’s the 75th anniversary of VE Day so, even in lockdown, the country is being encouraged to take part. A two-minute silence will be held at 11am, and Brits are being encouraged to decorate their homes in red, white and blue decorations.
