Fish Farmer

Congratulations to Marine

-

Elanco congratulates Marine Harvest on 50 years of pioneering excellence in sustainable salmon farming for the benefit of consumers and the environment. We look forward to continuing our work together for even greater success in the future.

Just as Marine Harvest began its involvement in salmon farming under a different name, Uni-lever, Elanco also started serving the aquaculture industry under another name, Novartis Animal Health.

Today Elanco’s mission remains the same as it’s always been - to help fish farmers, everywhere, to improve the health and quality of their stocks. We understand that the productivity of any farm is a reflection of the health status of each individual fish. That’s why we work tirelessly to ensure that every farmed fish, in every ocean, faces fewer barriers to healthy growth. This is the best way we know to help our customers maximize the productivity and profitability of their farming operations.

The products we develop, and the way we support our products, is driven by this singular determination.

Elanco aquacare™ – innovating and partnering for better healthcare management

Recently we launched aquacare, an innovative health monitoring tool designed specifically for the fish farming industry. Developed in collaboration with Ocea Mercatus, at a combined cost of $1.2 million, the aquacare tool combines the fish health expertise of Elanco with Ocea’s acclaimed farm software capability.

The aim is to improve healthcare decision making by facilitating faster collection and interpretation of health-related data. This will assist fish farmers to adapt health management practices in order to maintain the optimum balance of quality and profitability.

How Elanco aquacare works in practice

The aquacare software consists of a vaccines module, released in September 2014, and a sea lice module planned for release in 2016.

For the vaccines module, Elanco representatives collect fish health data at four different stages of the fish farming process: during vaccination, at pre-transfer, while the fish are at sea and, finally, when they are harvested. Collected data includes information on potential vaccine side effects, vaccine efficacy, fish development, growth rates and evidence of disease. At each stage, the fish health data is directly embedded in the farmers’ aquacare management system. This allows the platform to provide invaluable, real time complete life-cycle healthcare tracking, reporting and analysis that is not available through other software systems. Aquacare also incorporates follow-up, alert and reminder functions that help to ensure a seamless service right through to harvest.

Aquacare is designed to be applied globally allowing farmers to benchmark their results right across the salmonid-farming regions. As Matthias Hofer, Global Head of Elanco Emerging Businesses, puts it “Pulling from a global pool of data, aquacare will offer functionality and technology unlike anything else in the market, and increase the support the Elanco business can provide to

fish farmers for long term sustainability”.

Finally, the aquacare platform will continue to evolve in response to farmers’ feedback and industry needs. Implementation of the first release is being managed directly by our Aqua Technical Services professionals, working together with customers such as Marine Harvest. Future releases are already planned, including the launch of a customer portal and additional analytic functionality.
