Marine Harvest Chile’s new general manager

Wide experience of salmon farming comes with Andy Jackson to his appointment as general manager of Marine Harvest Chile, succeeding Emilio De Vidts, who has retired to Santiago.

JACKSON joined Marine Harvest in 1988 from BOCM – the Fulmar Feeds producer – and served as freshwater manager, health and development manager, and seawater manager in Scotland.

He was appointed production manager in Chile at the end of 1992 and has helped raise production volume from 5,000 tonnes in 1992 to over 10,000 tonnes this year.

He told Fish Farmer: ‘Marine Harvest Chile has achieved spectacular growth. Less than ten years after the initial decision to invest in Chile, we are harvesting over 10,000 tonnes a year.

‘Much of the credit for the success of the operation must go to Emilio De Vidts, who has been involved in every phase of project. Most importantly, he formed a young and enthusiastic team of managers which he has led with energy and vision through all the changes.

‘The last 10 years have been full of changes, but so will the next.

‘The rising volumes of salmon will have to be matched by higher quality standards and lower production costs. That is the reality of salmon farming today. I am looking forward to continuing the work started by Emilio and to maintaining Marine Harvest Chile as one of the foremost salmon farming companies in the southern hemisphere.’

The experience of Emilio De Vidts will not be lost to Marine Harvest Chile. He will continue to be involved with Marine Harvest as non-executive president, advising on many aspects of the business, particularly external affairs. He will represent the company on the Chilean Salmon Growers Association, with which he has been closely associated for many years.
