Vote paves way for Colonsay farm

RESIDENTS on Colonsay have voted to back a proposed fish farm developmen­t off the north east coast of the island.

Results of a ballot were announced and revealed a majority of 60.9 per cent were in favour of the plan by Marine Harvest, which would create four new jobs.

The ballot, conducted by the Electoral Reform Society, asked islanders: Are you in favour of Marine Harvest establishi­ng a fish farm off the coast of Colonsay?

Of the 121 eligible voters, 110 turned out to cast their vote, with the ‘yes’ vote coming out on top by 67 to 43.

Colonsay Community Council has welcomed the decision. Secretary Mike McNicholl said: ‘This decision will bring much-needed new jobs and the fi rst big industry to the island.

‘We now hope to work closely with Marine Harvest to secure the maximum benefits for our community from this exciting new venture.’
