Vote paves way for Colon­say farm

RES­I­DENTS on Colon­say have voted to back a pro­posed fish farm de­vel­op­ment off the north east coast of the is­land.

Re­sults of a bal­lot were an­nounced and re­vealed a ma­jor­ity of 60.9 per cent were in favour of the plan by Marine Harvest, which would cre­ate four new jobs.

The bal­lot, con­ducted by the Elec­toral Re­form So­ci­ety, asked is­lan­ders: Are you in favour of Marine Harvest es­tab­lish­ing a fish farm off the coast of Colon­say?

Of the 121 el­i­gi­ble vot­ers, 110 turned out to cast their vote, with the ‘yes’ vote com­ing out on top by 67 to 43.

Colon­say Com­mu­nity Coun­cil has wel­comed the de­ci­sion. Sec­re­tary Mike McNi­choll said: ‘This de­ci­sion will bring much-needed new jobs and the fi rst big in­dus­try to the is­land.

‘We now hope to work closely with Marine Harvest to se­cure the max­i­mum ben­e­fits for our com­mu­nity from this ex­cit­ing new ven­ture.’
