A ge­netic mu­ta­tion that is thought to have cropped up in early hu­mans be­tween 2-3 mil­lion years ago could be what kick-started the changes that en­abled us to sus­tain the ef­fort re­quired to run long dis­tances. When sci­en­tist spliced the gene into mice, the ro­dents be­came able to run sig­nif­i­cantly longer than their ‘nor­mal’ coun­ter­parts.
