A su­per­crit­i­cal fluid forms at spe­cific tem­per­a­tures and pres­sures. It has char­ac­ter­is­tics of both liq­uids and gases. For ex­am­ple, it can dis­solve sub­stances like a liq­uid. Flu­ids in the man­tle be­have in this way, dis­solv­ing gas and rocks.
