THINK ABOUT YOUR MILK
Understanding which kind of milk is best for the planet can be a tricky balancing act, but fortunately, there is some useful data to guide us. Cow’s milk has by far the highest carbon emissions and water use of five types of milk examined by a team at Oxford University in 2018. The production of cow’s milk also requires at least 11 times more land than the others. Of the milk alternatives, rice milk has the highest carbon footprint, while almond milk has the lowest. However, almond milk does use a lot of water. Soy and oat milk are slightly higher in carbon emissions than almond milk but use far less water.
