HULL

This northern port town may not be on your immediate shortlist when it comes to choosing a city break but it has plenty in store to help change that perception. Every four years a British city is awarded City of Culture, and this time it’s Hull’s turn, with a whopping 365 days of cultural activities planned. Expect large-scale visual projections, music festivals, art exhibitions, theatre performances, comedy acts and more.

The BBC has even deployed a special team here to cover the year-long festivities, so you’ll be seeing a lot of the city whether you choose to visit it first-hand or not.
