Summer of Content
This year we have had one of the hottest summers I can remember in the UK. Tarmac melted, hosepipes were banned, ice-cream rationing was enforced (OK, so I made up that last one, but it was a close thing!). It has been a summer where overseas travel hasn’t felt quite like the burning priority it usually is, and yet still the pull of France has been strong. Our writers have been making the most of the great weather to walk in Luberon, cycle in the Alps, drink beer in Marseille, drive 2CVS in Dordogne and a host of other wonderful French adventures which they will share with you in future issues of the magazine. La vie, as they say, has definitely been belle.
Inside this issue you will hopefully find some inspiration for your own journeys. We share a Pyrenean city-break idea, a visit to the ultra-modern new aquarium at Nausicaá, a drive around Finistère, a round or two on the golf courses of the north to celebrate the Ryder Cup starting in France on 28 September and a brand-new cycle route following the River Meuse through the north-east. Dog-lovers will definitely want to read the guide to accommodation that welcomes their beloved four-legged friends, too.
Those looking for cultural satisfaction should enjoy an account of the history of the accordion, a look at some of the most influential French women over the years and also some great new books and films to investigate. Our language pages are crammed with helpful scenarios, quizzes and guidance, designed to make that next trip over the Channel a smoother and more fulfilling one. If all that intellectual edification has left you feeling peckish, why not bake our tasty pissaladières recipe, find out how to bake the perfect fougasse at The Bertinet Bakery in Bath, and check out the best places to eat on a visit to Arras. Maybe enjoy it all with a glass of fragrant gewurztraminer? I’ll leave that up to you. À bientôt!
