France has worked hard over the years to protect its exception culturelle, supporting French filmmakers, musicians and television producers with subsidies and tax incentives to enable them to hold their own against international fare. Now three of the country’s biggest television broadcasters– state-owned France Télévisions, together with TF1 and M6 – are joining forces to introduce a subscription service called Salto. The service aims to provide a home-grown alternative to the powerful Americanowned Netflix and will offer original content as well as a back catalogue of French-made television programmes.
