If a certain TV show has got you Googling for a budget château to do up then here is a gargantuan project to get stuck into. This château on the outskirts of desirable St-jean d’angély in Charente-maritime has 27 bedrooms and various annexes and outbuildings amounting to 3,000m2 of potential living space, all set in 15 hectares of land. Built in 1850 from stone and slate, the three-storey château and its various extensions have been used in recent times as a children’s home and offices. Much of the interior has the look of an institution from the 1980s, but there are plenty of stunning original features too, not least the château’s handsome façade.

Attractive St-jean d’angély with its abbey, half-timbered houses, shops and restaurants is just a few minutes’ drive away while the Atlantic coast, including the historic port of La Rochelle, can be reached in under an hour.

The four-day auction starts at midday on October 22 with a starting price of €300,000. More details at agoras
