Police plea after driver killed in head-on crash

-

Police have appealed for witnesses after a man died in a head-on crash in Somerset.

The collision took place on the A361 in East Cranmore at around 6.40pm on Wednesday, April 17, and involved a white BMW 1 Series and a green Vauxhall Astra travelling towards each other on the main road.

The man who was driving the Astra was confirmed to have died at the scene.

Avon and Somerset Police said his family were being supported by a support officer.

The male BMW driver was taken to hospital for treatment.

The two cars were driving towards each other, in opposite directions on the road.

The white BMW 1 Series was heading towards Shepton Mallet, while the Astra was travelling towards Frome.

Police said that, while inquiries were at an early stage, officers have also spoken to the driver of a black Ford Fiesta, which was travelling in the same direction as the BMW, and were also considering the possibility this car was involved.

The A361 remained closed through the night while emergency services carried out investigation work, before reopening at around 10.20am on Thursday, April 18.

Officers believe there were several cars and a green John Deere tractor, which was towing a red silage trailer in the area at the time.

The occupants of those vehicles were urged to get in touch with police if they witnessed anything.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “We’d ask them, plus anyone else who witnessed the collision or has relevant dashcam, to please contact us online or on 101 quoting reference number 5224098411.”
