Mario Kart Live for the Nintendo Switch sees everyone’s favourite plumber Mario and his chums breaking free from the confines of the digital Mushroom Kingdom and spilling straight into the halls and rooms of your very own home via a blending of real-world environment and augmented reality.

To play you’ll first need to download the free software from the Nintendo eShop and purchase either the Mario or Luigi remote controlled racing kart which both feature a forward-facing camera that’s beams live footage straight to your television set or handheld Switch. Also, with the Kart’s come a set of cardboard coloured gates that you unfold and place around your room of choice. In turn this creates a virtual circuit to race around which you can enhance further with optional arrow markers.

The gates are fully customisable, and you can add different effects, such as item box drops and speed boosts or obstacles to avoid chain chomps, thwomp blocks and piranha plants. The more you race the more customisable options you’ll unlock. Tracks also feature all the usual Mario

Kart environments such as snow, lava and sandy deserts all of which affect the handling of the Kart.

The augmented reality itself is simply stunning and it’s quite a spectacle to behold when you first see all your opponent’s racing around the real-world environment with you.
