Goldeneye

Rare - 1997

-

Goldeneye from Rare needs no introduction, in many ways it's now the stuff of gaming legend, with its mix of atmospheric gameplay, use of stealth, multi-player deathmatch and of course it's the first FPS to ever incorporate the bodily ‘headshot' kill.

In the game you get to play as James Bond — top British secret agent 007, who must hunt down ex-fellow 00 agent Alec Trevelyan who, under the guise of the Janus organisation have taken control of a space-based weapons satellite codenamed ‘Goldeneye' While the game follows the main plot of the movie very closely, featuring almost every scene you could imagine, it's not until the latter stages when the jungle action begins, with Bond and his female sidekick Natalya heading to Cuba to infiltrate the Janus secret base.

Having been shot down in their light aircraft, Bond and Natalya must head through the dark and dense jungle terrain, dispatching well-armed soldiers and taking out mounted machine gun posts and ammo dumps. Towards the end you must also face off against thighcrushing Bond femme-fatale Xenia Onatopp, before making your way through caverns leading to the secret base. The jungle level was also one of the more atmospheric sections, with a green haze that made it difficult to see what lay ahead.

An absolute stalwart classic of a game that defined a genre and led to many a fun and sometimes ‘heated' get-together with your mates — thanks to the inclusion of an awesome multi-player mode — anyone for slaps only?
