FORMAT: PS4, XBOX ONE, PC | PUBLISHER: SEGA | DEVELOPER: SUMO DIGITAL | RELEASE: Q1 2019 | PLAYERS: 1-4 (UP TO 12 ONLINE)

Mario may be the king of kartracing, but the blue hedgehog has certainly given the plumber a run for his money. With two well-received racers in the last generation featuring Sonic and other beloved characters across Sega’s IPS, Sumo Digital is revving the engines again for a new racer that puts Sonic’s universe at the forefront. It’s also taking a lesson from recent multiplayer trends by putting teamplay at its core, which we’ve also seen in arcade racers this year like Onrush and Trailblazers. Whether playing solo, split-screen or online with up to 12 players, you’ll be in a team of three racers, so teamwork makes the dream work. Our recent hands-on may have only been in single-player, but even these races proved a challenge against AI opponents. You may comfortably sail past everyone else and drift like a demon, but if you’re not doing anything to help your lagging teammates it’s not going to count for much.

Here, we break down the team tactics that are the recipe for success, the characters you can expect to control behind the wheel as, and the modes that could slingshot Team Sonic Racing to the front of the pack.
