VEGETABLE GARDEN JOBS FOR OCTOBER

GROW GREENHOUSE SALADS Sow rocket, winter lettuce, spinach, corn salad and spicy Oriental greens in empty greenhouse beds or containers. You’ll get a few leaves this autumn and fresh growth early next spring.

SOW CAULIFLOWER You can sow early-summer cropping cauliflowers now to overwinter in the greenhouse or coldframe. Plant out next spring, covering them with netting to keep off hungry pigeons.

SOW HARDY PEAS They won’t always survive winter but the reward of fat early peas next year is worth the risk. Sow a hardy, round-seeded cultivar into well-drained soil; if the ground is heavy they’ll rot.
