BUILD A HEDGEHOG HOME
With just basic DIY skills and some sheets of plywood, it’s easy to knock up a simple hedgehog home. This recommended design is suitable as a nursery nest or as a winter hibernaculum. It includes an entrance tunnel that leads into the main chamber, giving them extra security from disturbance and predators. YOU WILL NEED l Two sheets of 1.5cm-thick FSC exterior plywood (W60xL200cm) l saw l hammer l screws
Mark out the pieces of 1 wood according to the diagram (right), and cut to size. Assemble the pieces into 2 a main box (minus its roof) and entrance chamber, using screws (or nails). Screw the entrance 3 chamber to the front of the main box. The idea is that a hedgehog accesses the box via the entrance chamber and then turns into the secluded inner main box. Fasten the main roof down, 4 ideally with screws so you can inspect and clear out rotting leaf debris from the box in early spring.
