Japanese maples are prized for their elegant structure, delicate leaves and fabulous autumn leaf colour. Although they’re slow-growing, some can grow into quite substantial trees, so if you have a small space or could grow one in a container, look for a compact acer like this one. Fresh orange-yellow leaves emerge in spring and mature to lime green before turning bright yellow in autumn.
