Fruity surprise

A couple of years ago this unidentified shrub started growing in one of my borders. I knew I hadn’t planted it but, intrigued by what it might be, I left it in situ and watched it grow. Earlier this year it bore blossom for the first time and then, while gazing at it from the kitchen window, I spotted... an apple! I must have thrown an apple core out for the birds but my poor shot landed in the border and took root. What a wonderful surprise this mystery plant turned out to be! Karen Drury, Isle of Skye
