Once the thick-stemmed dog­woods (Cor­nus sericea and C. alba cul­ti­vars) have es­tab­lished for a cou­ple of years, cut them down to the ground each April. Although this sounds harsh, this an­nual ‘stool­ing’ pro­duces new stems that are far more colour­ful than the older wood.
