AVOID WALKING ON LAWNS

Frosty footsteps can make the grass blades break.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR APHIDS

You might find them overwintering on tender plants in the greenhouse. Remember to check under the leaves as well as the stems. Remove dead flowers and foliage promptly to improve air circulation around plants.

HARVEST HOLLY FOR WINTER DECORATIONS

Wear gloves and use sharp secateurs to cut off attractive holly stems. Pop them in a bucket of water and cut off the stem bases with a sloping cut to improve water take up. Store in a shed or garage until you need them.

LEAVE FADED HYDRANGEA FLOWERS

Don’t cut them back – they look attractive when coated in frost and provide a cosy winter home for a range of small beneficial insects.
