Make a bean trench

-

Start preparing a patch of ground for hungry and thirsty crops this summer with this simple but effective technique. Dig a trench For beans, the trench should be about 60cm (2ft) deep. Line with newspaper then fill with fruit and vegetable peelings, skins and cores. Cover with soil Place soil over the top, then add more organic matter and soil layers until the trench is full. Over the coming months your organic matter will feed the soil and help it retain moisture. Get planting Wait until May to sow or plant beans into this soil. For courgettes and pumpkins, dig a square hole for each plant rather than a trench.
