Recycle your Christmas tree

Make sure real Christmas trees get a new lease of life:

Most councils offer a Christmas tree collection service where trees are chipped and made into mulch. Cut up or shred side branches into smaller sections, then place on their own heap. The rotting needles will produce an ericaceous compost. Saw up larger branches and stack in a shady corner to make a log pile – a shelter for all manner of insects.
