2. PUT IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE

Blue tits and great tits like boxes 2-5m (6-15ft) above the ground. House sparrow and starling boxes should ideally be under the house eaves. For all these species, make sure the box is out of reach of enterprisi­ng cats. In contrast, robin and wren boxes should be tucked out of sight behind dense climbers; if you can see the box, so can a predator, so see how well you can hide it. Place boxes so they face between north and east – it gives the birds and their broods protection from both strong sunshine and the prevailing wind.
