Q Can I reduce a vigorous robinia that’s suckering?

- ALI WINTERTEACH, BY EMAIL

ARobinia’s roots grow near the soil surface, making this a relatively safe plant to grow near the house and drains. However, they often produce suckers, especially in sandy soils, dry summers or after severe pruning. I would prune it this winter to reduce its size then dig out the suckers, removing them from the roots.
