Pruning tips for apricots

Q Can I help my apricot blossom?

- BARBARA SHAW, BY EMAIL

AApricots need full sun and a sheltered spot and will flower on older wood. That’s why it’s best not to prune hard (as you might with peaches, which flower on the previous year’s growth). You can shorten growth in summer, but don’t prune in winter. After the heat of last summer, there’s every chance buds will be produced this spring. If so, hand pollinate them with a small paintbrush to ensure a good set.
