Help I’ve got lumpy clematis!
Q What are these lumps on my clematis? They dried out the stalks completely MARLENE SNEE, BY EMAIL
AThese are scale insects and they suck the sap of plants. When young they move around the plant but as they mature they stop moving and just suck sap until they mature and die, releasing eggs that develop into young ‘crawlers’. They tend to be more common on trees and shrubs that are stressed through want of water or nutrients. If the stems are dead, cut them out and make sure the clematis is watered and fed next season. Spray the plant with an insecticide several times next spring, before flowering, to control any scale insects that remain.
