What to look for
7-10% of body heat is lost through your head – more in windy conditions. A well-fitting hood keeps you warm and stops rain trickling down your neck
ZIPS HOOD
Good quality zips won’t jam or stick. Ideally, the main zip should go up to your chin. Zips with storm flaps provide extra wind and water protection
LENGTH
Choose a jacket that isn’t too short, as it may ride up and expose your back. Too long and it can restrict movement
DRAWCORDS
Found at the bottom, waist and/ or on the hood, use them to give a snug fit
POCKETS
Ideal for keeping tools and sundries close to hand. Lined pockets keep hands warm; storm flaps help items stay dry inside
TAPED SEAMS
These prevent water entering through needlestitching holes
CUFFS
Elasticated cuffs or those with Velcro fastenings provide a closer fit and help prevent water ingress
