BEGONIAS

Q Can begonias grow in shade? TRACY ROBERTS, CROYDON

A Most begonias tolerate shade but grow taller and won’t flower as freely as when planted in sun. Avoid poorly-drained soil and don’t plant them beneath trees unless you water frequently. They’re ideal for pots in part shade or a hanging basket on a north-facing porch.

Q Why did bedding begonias die in my greenhouse? LORRAINE WRIGHT, GLOUCESTER

A Begonia semperflorens can be overwintered (which is useful for double-flowered kinds that can’t be grown from seed). It’s best to keep them on a sunny windowsill. They need higher temperatures and a drier atmosphere than most greenhouses in winter. In cold conditions they’ll suffer from overwatering and will collapse from grey mould infection.

Q How can I grow begonia plugs? ANITA PARKER, WARWICKSHIRE

A Begonias are tricky to grow from seed so plug plants are a practical, cost-effective option. Small begonia plugs are very sensitive to overwatering and cold, so make sure they’re not chilled when they arrive and keep them above 10C (50F) at all times. Plant into cell trays, not pots, to help prevent overwatering. Use fresh, quality compost and firm it by gently tapping the filled trays (if you press down on the compost you’ll remove air, reducing its ability to drain.) Water the trays by standing them in a tray of water to prevent overwetting and keep in a bright place.
