Q Does soil pH matter?

- LESLEY HANNIGAN, BY EMAIL

ASoil pH won’t affect most veg crops, unless it’s very high (alkaline) or very low (acidic). Acid-lovers such as raspberries and blueberries may develop iron deficiencies in alkaline soil (so apply sequestered iron) and cabbages may develop club root in acidic soils (apply lime). Mulching with a layer of organic matter improves all soil types.
