WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

You can follow the same processpro­ces for each of these four plants to get excellent, nutritious sources of liquid food for hungry gardens – but what exactly do they add?

COMFREY

Happy in the sun or shade, it’s a long-lived plant that’s s a wonder of nature. It’s rich in potassium , so good for feeding flowers and fruit, and contains phosphorus and nitrogen. Once you’ve mad made your liquid feed it’ll be higher in general nutrients than manure! It also contains Vitamin B12 – fantastic for plant growth.

BORAGE

This pretty, self-seeding herb is a striking shade of blue, and loves a bit of sun. Bees love it, and so will your plants. It’s a fantastic source of trace minerals such as magnesium, and B vitamins – it’s brilliant composted and also made into a feed. Try adding it to other feeds to create a more all-round food source.

NETTLES

They may be weeds that sting, but nettles are a fantastic garden arden plant – and making themth into plant food gets rid of themhem at least! They’reThey nutritious andan full of nitrogen, so if you’re planningla­nning on feeding leafy crops, this his is a great choice. It’s often added dded to comfrey feed to up the nitrogenit­rogen factor to make a good all-rounder. ll-rounder.

SEAWEED

Take advantage of the fruits of sea and gather a washed-up handful of this wonderful food, just check with the landowner or local council fifirst that it’s ok. It’s an all-round health kick for plants and soil, but not just in giving offff vital nutrients. It encourages organisms to break food down for plants, and also contains growth hormones to stimulate good rooting.
