Visitor numbers on the increase for wide range of ‘outstanding’ venues
Visitor numbers at gardens rose by eight per cent in 2016, according to VisitEngland’s annual survey.
Based on data supplied from 1,545 English attractions, the survey reported the most significant growth in visitor numbers was to gardens, zoos and theme parks.
Royal Botanic Gardens Kew remains in third place on the list of England’s most-visited, paid-for attractions with 1.8 million visitors (behind Chester Zoo with 1.9 million and the Tower of London with 2.7 million). RHS Garden Wisley was 11th highest with 1.1 million visitors. The Eden Project, in 15th place, just topped the million mark.
Figures were also boosted by specific celebrations, such as the ‘Year of the English Garden’, as well as a celebration of the 300th anniversary of ‘Capability’ Brown, which not only encouraged more people in the UK to visit, but also attracted foreign visitors thanks to favourable exchange rates.
“There are so many outstanding attractions offering year-round experiences throughout the country and it’s great to see Brits enjoyed 2016’s ‘Year of the English Garden’,” said VisitEngland chief executive Sally Balcombe. “Attractions are a much loved and valuable part of the tourism landscape, adding colour and variety to the visitor experience and encouraging people to get out and explore, driving the value of tourism across the regions.” ● Visit www.visitbritain.org for more information.
