Start basil off in the green­house or on a win­dowsill – this herb will ap­pre­ci­ate warmth and sun through sum­mer to get it­self es­tab­lished. Tamp down seed com­post in a tray, mini trough or in a few pots, then sow basil seed thinly over the top. Cover with a thin layer of Ver­mi­culite and wa­ter well. Keep com­post moist, and once your seedlings are large enough you can sep­a­rate them into their own pots to grow on. Harvest reg­u­larly and it’ll keep compact and bushy.
