Start basil off in the greenhouse or on a windowsill – this herb will appreciate warmth and sun through summer to get itself established. Tamp down seed compost in a tray, mini trough or in a few pots, then sow basil seed thinly over the top. Cover with a thin layer of Vermiculite and water well. Keep compost moist, and once your seedlings are large enough you can separate them into their own pots to grow on. Harvest regularly and it’ll keep compact and bushy. Why not try red or purple basil along with green for something different? Different varieties are available from www.chilternseeds.co.uk.
