Schools vie for pump­kin prize

ADer­byshire school has scooped top prize in a na­tional com­pe­ti­tion to grow a mon­ster pump­kin. Deer Park Pri­mary School in Ch­ester­field beat 100 other schools with a 110kg (242½lb) gi­ant fruit, just pip­ping the 107kg (236lb) en­try from Tim­ber­ley Academy in Birm­ing­ham.

Great Malvern Pri­mary School, from Worces­ter, came third, with an 81kg (178lb) berry.

Run by the Royal Hor­ti­cul­tural So­ci­ety as part of the char­ity’s Cam­paign for School Gar­den­ing ini­tia­tive, all the schools were given seeds har­vested from the So­ci­ety’s award-win­ning 340kg (749½lb) pump­kin from last year.

The win­ning pump­kin was cut up to make into soup as part of the RHS’ Big Soup Share, where over 1,000 schools cooked own-grown pro­duce for fam­ily, friends and the lo­cal com­mu­nity.
