ADerbyshire school has scooped top prize in a national competition to grow a monster pumpkin. Deer Park Primary School in Chesterfield beat 100 other schools with a 110kg (242½lb) giant fruit, just pipping the 107kg (236lb) entry from Timberley Academy in Birmingham.
Great Malvern Primary School, from Worcester, came third, with an 81kg (178lb) berry.
Run by the Royal Horticultural Society as part of the charity’s Campaign for School Gardening initiative, all the schools were given seeds harvested from the Society’s award-winning 340kg (749½lb) pumpkin from last year.
The winning pumpkin was cut up to make into soup as part of the RHS’ Big Soup Share, where over 1,000 schools cooked own-grown produce for family, friends and the local community.
