Knoll Gardens, Dorset

-

Renowned plantsman Neil Lucas, who specialises in naturalistic planting and grasses, has created a masterclass in year-round planting here. Grasses look great for much of the year, but it’s in the winter months when they take on a new life, with a rusty landscape of swaying stems topped with frost. Grasses come alive among the seed heads and low-key winter shrubs. Until early spring, when many get cut down, it’s an icy prairie paradise. It’s open until December 21, then closes until February. Admission is £6.50, £5.50 for concessions. VISIT FOR The grasses of course – this garden shows that swathes of them are invaluable in winter.
