TV gardener inspires youngster to grow vegetables for charity
An eight-year old boy has raised more than £200 for charity by growing vegetables growing growing and selling vegetables, and selling vegetables, after being inspired by Love Your Garden presenter Alan Titchmarsh. Stanley Parrott from Banstead, Surrey, started growing veg 18 months ago to raise money for his friend Harry, who has cerebral palsy, and subsequently, patients at the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher.
“I like all the gardens Alan creates to help people,” said Stanley, who started his green-fingered ventures by growing carrots, tomatoes, radishes and peppers in a trough he was given for his seventh birthday. The resulting produce raised £15.
“I like beetroot best, as my grandad pickles them.
I like eating carrots and spring onions, but they make my nose sting!”
This year enterprising Stanley grew even more veg and annuals, such as sunflowers in large pots and tubs, his aunt coining the name ‘Curly Roots Produce.’
In September Stanley set up a stall at a barbecue held outside his home. Helped by brother Alfie, 10, he raised £181.
Mum Nikki recently registered his website ‘Curly Roots Produce’.
