Get your early potatoes going

-

It’s time to start thinking about a new early potato crop and you can order varieties such as ‘Arran Pilot’ and ‘Winston’ now. You should chit them around six weeks before planting them in the ground, so if you’re in a mild spot and tend to plant them in early March, start now. If your area is less mild, leave chitting until late January or early February. Pop each seed potato in one slot of an egg carton and leave on the windowsill in good natural light. Eyes will start sprouting and when they’re about 2cm (¾in) long they’re ready to plant.
