3 Grow Grow disease-resistant veg

-

To ensure a healthy organic veg plot, choose disease-resistant varieties: ‘Sarpo’ potatoes don’t succumb to blight, while cabbage ‘Kilaxy’, cauliflower ‘Clapton’ and Brussels sprout ‘Crispus’ offer excellent resistance to clubroot. Carrot ‘Flyaway’ has been bred to resist carrot root fly. More blight-resistant tomatoes, such as ‘Mountain Magic’ and ‘Crimson Cherry’, are coming onto the market. Organic gardeners are keen to know that seeds haven’t been treated with chemicals, so look for organic ranges (Unwins, Johnsons, Su ons, D.T. Brown, Mr Fothergill’s and The Organic Gardening Catalogue all offer organic veg seed). Always practise crop rotation and never grow the same veg in the same place each year. It’ll help to avoid a build-up of soil-borne pests.
