Smart planting can deter pests without you having to lift a finger. Plant French marigolds or chives close to tomatoes and their scent can help to keep aphids away. Or sow onions near to carrots, because the smell deters carrot root fly. Why not try planting a ‘sacrificia­l crop’ of nasturtium near cabbages and cauliflowe­r? Cabbage white bu erflies will lay their eggs on the nasturtium­s instead, keeping the caterpilla­rs away from your brassicas.
