8 Plant good companions
Smart planting can deter pests without you having to lift a finger. Plant French marigolds or chives close to tomatoes and their scent can help to keep aphids away. Or sow onions near to carrots, because the smell deters carrot root fly. Why not try planting a ‘sacrificial crop’ of nasturtium near cabbages and cauliflower? Cabbage white bu erflies will lay their eggs on the nasturtiums instead, keeping the caterpillars away from your brassicas.
